Volunteers in Service (VIS) Program Partner Low-Income Minority School

Low-income, marginalized and disadvantaged communities in Pakistan face chronic problems in all aspects of life including accessibility to quality education. Informal schools attempting to bring drop-outs in the mainstream educational milieu have fared not so well either. The underlying philosophy of UCP’s Volunteer Program is to serve the poor communities irrespective of their religious or ethnic leanings.

The VIS Program has now partnered Junior Model, a primary level school in the low-income workers residential area called Najaf Colony near Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore. The tuition fee structure for all classes is less than Rs.200 per month. The VIS Program has undertaken to deploy UCP volunteers on a continuous basis to teach the 85 minority students in the school.

This intervention by UCP volunteering teachers―it is hoped― shall modify the learning outcomes of the students. A third-party evaluation shall be undertaken after 6 months time to ascertain the same.
